The Sierra Club Supports Senator??€™s Proven Record

Honolulu ??€" Senator Dan Akaka expressed his appreciation to the Sierra Club Hawaii Chapter for its endorsement of his re-election to the U.S. Senate, and promised to continue to work toward building a sustainable Hawaii.

??€œI have always, and continue to be a strong supporter of protecting our environment," said Senator Akaka. ??€œI believe it is necessary to build a sustainable future, especially in Hawaii, which is unique for its native habitats and tropical surroundings.

??€œThe Sierra Club has made many contributions to building a healthier environment and I hope to continue to work with them in the U.S. Senate to ensure a better place for everyone to live.??€ ?

Senator Akaka has fought for improving the environment and protecting our natural resources by supporting and helping to enact the following legislation: Hawaii Water Resources Acts (2000, 2005); Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Act (2000); Methane Hydrate Research and Development Acts (1999, 2005), Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Technology Act (2005); Hawaii Energy Study (2005); Hawaii Tropical Forest Recovery At (1992); Alien Species Prevention and Enforcement Act (1992); and Marine Minerals Research Act (1996). He also recently became an original co-sponsor of the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act of 2006. Senator Akaka has served the people of Hawai??€˜i in the nation??€™s capitol for the past 30 years. Now seeking his 3rd full term in the U.S. Senate, Akaka is now a Ranking Member on the Veterans' Affairs Committee, the Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management, the Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks Historic Preservation and Recreation, and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Federal Government Management, the Federal Workforce and the District of Columbia.
