OUR objectives in Iraq have not yet been made clear: Is it our goal to occupy Baghdad, and if so, for how long? A rush to battle without a strategy to win the peace is folly."

That quote, from a speech I delivered in October 2002 on the floor of the U.S. Senate, has proved tragically prophetic. At that time, I joined with 22 of my Senate colleagues to oppose invading Iraq. I believed then, as I do now, that it was wiser to wait, but ours was not the prevailing sentiment. Today we find ourselves mired in a war that has not yet brought about the peace that both Iraqis and Americans so desperately want, a war for which both our countries have paid too dear a price.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye urged nearly 100 residents at a luncheon in Lihu'e yesterday to return Hawai'i's other Democratic national senator, Daniel Akaka, to another six-year term in Congress.

At a gathering Inouye supporters at the Lihu'e Civic Center, Inouye said while Akaka can be gracious, religious and compassionate, he has won a reputation for making hard decisions.

When President Bush pressed for the attack on Iraq to search for weapons of mass destruction, both he and Akaka gave credibility to United Nation-sanctioned searches that yielded no such weapons, and voted against going to war even though they - both World War II veterans - could be viewed as unpatriotic, Inouye said.

Hawaii is set to receive $1 million in federal funds for an ethanol demonstration project, U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka's office has announced.

The funds will go toward research and development of sugar-based ethanol production in Hawaii.

Companies that plan to open ethanol plants here say they are working with the agriculture industry to develop the crops that would serve as the feed stock for the fuel.

"It is vital that we continue to find new ways of securing our energy through local resources," Akaka said in a news release yesterday.

WASHINGTON, DC, July 3, 2006 (ENS) - Senator Daniel Akaka, a Hawaii Democrat, today announced the Senate Energy Committee has approved $1 million for an ethanol demonstration project in Hawaii.

Senator Akaka was instrumental in securing the funds from the Department of Interior Appropriations Bill, under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As an Energy Committee conferee, Senator Akaka enlarged the scope of the ethanol provision and secured its inclusion in the final version of the bill. These funds will be used to ensure commercialization of sugar cane ethanol.
