SENATOR AKAKA RECEIVES POLICE UNION ENDORSEMENT

HONOLULU?? ? ??€"Senator Dan Akaka has been endorsed by the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO) for his re-election to the U.S. Senate.

??€œEveryday, members of Hawaii??€™s police departments play significant roles in ensuring our safety and protecting our lives,??€ ? Akaka said. ??€œI am honored to receive their support and promise to continue to help them do their jobs.??€ ?

As a senior member of the Homeland Security Committee, Senator Akaka has championed increases in funding for first responders. In 2005, he offered an amendment to the FY06 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act to counter budget cuts proposed by the Administration and the Republican Congress by increasing first responder funding by $587 million. Senator Akaka also cosponsored the Homeland Security Grant Enhancement Act, which ensures that Hawaii receives a consistent amount of first responder funding on an annual basis. This funding has helped to improve emergency communications and purchase protective equipment for Hawaii??€™s police officers.

OPPOSING CLOTURE ON H.R. 5970

Mr. AKAKA: Mr. President, it pains me to have to choose between
the urgent needs of important groups in my constituency, which is why my
decision to oppose cloture on the so-called "trifecta bill," combining
an estate tax compromise, minimum wage increase, and tax extenders, is a
difficult one for me. However, it is one that I find to be necessary.

There are some good measures in this bill, particularly in the tax
extenders package. I applaud my colleague in the House, Representative
